A casual player and full-time fan's take on the competitors, the tournaments and the business of tennis

The Day's Featured Match-Ups

Sunday, August 1

Men's Matches
Allianz Suisse Open
GSTAAD, SWITZERLAND
Almagro won their only previous meeting in Acapulco and has been really hitting his stride this summer. But Gasquet is tough and will certainly put up a fight. I still think, though, the Spaniard will get his second title of the year

Farmer's Classic
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA
Querrey has faced a couple scares this week, and either Lopez or Murray will be a challenge. But the defending champ has a lot riding on this match so he won’t make it easy. Looks like the U.S. Open Series is off to a great start!

ATP Studena Croatia Open
UMAG, CROATIA
These two actually have a long history, and Starace has been the victor once. Still, JCF has been near the top of his game this year and I like him to take home the title

Ladies' Matches
Bank of the West Classic
STANFORD, CALIFORNIA
Azarenka was stellar in her semifinal win over Sam Stosur, but Sharapova’s been tested this week and come out on top and Radwanska has gotten here only dropping one set. Whoever it is she plays in the final will put up a good fight and make this quite a championship to watch!

Istanbul Cup
ISTANBUL, TURKEY
Pavs won the pair’s only prior meeting, but that was a long time ago, before either hit her stride. Vesnina has played and lost a couple finals while Pavs has won the only one she’s played. It could be a fight, but I still like the teenager to bring it home
